Friedemann Schmidt-Mechau 2017

• Born 1955 January 8th in Frankfurt/Main.

• Piano lessons beginning in 1961, from 1964 with → Doris Eßich. From 1965 cello lessons with → Hans-Wilhelm Kufferath.

• Beginning in 1969 musical self-study.

• 1971-74 apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker and 1974-87 jobs as a joiner-cabinetmaker, master craftman's diploma.

• 1987-90 study of musicology (history and arts as subsidiary subjects) at the Carl von Ossietzky-Universität, Oldenburg, mainly with → Gustavo Becerra-Schmidt and → Gertrud Meyer-Denkmann.

• 1988-91 study of composition and piano at the Hochschule für Künste, Bremen, with → Jens-Peter Ostendorf and → Luciano Ortis.

• Since 1989 participation in different workshops, e.g. Experimental voice techniques at the Roy Hart Theatre in Malerargues, Frankreich; Internationale Ferienkurse Darmstadt 1990 and 1996; etc.

• 1990 co-founder and until 1995 chairman of oh ton - support of new music in the province, thus organizer of many concerts in the region of Weser-Ems and co-founder and artistic director of the oh ton-ensemble, a chamber orchestra for new music.

• Since 1992 free-lance composer.

• 1994 member of the jury for the composition award of the Kulturkreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI and the Gesellschaft für Neue Musik.

• 1995 speaker at the Wiener Sommerseminar für Neue Musik on a grant from the Foreign Ministry.

• 1996, 1998, 1999/2000, 2001/02 and 2003/2004 organization of “Response“ projects at two schools at a time in Frankfurt/Main, each together with the cellist → Matthias Lorenz featuring Helmut Lachenmann's „temA“, Cornelius Schwehr's „poco a poco subito“, Bernd-Alois Zimmermann's „Présence“ and Frank Gerhardt's „Klaviertrio II“.

• Since 1997 Gertrud Meyer-Denkmann's assistant and co-editor of „Körper Gesten Klänge – Improvisation, Interpretation und Komposition Neuer Musik am Klavier“ (Saarbrücken 1998), „Mehr als nur Töne – Aspekte des Gestischen in neuer Musik und im Musiktheater“ (Saarbrücken 2003), „Grenzübergänge zwischen Musik, Kunst und den Medien heute“ (Oldenburg 2005) and „Sprache – Sprechen – Spielen – Lernen. Eine kommunikativ-performative Sprachförderung“ (Oldenburg 2009).

• 2002 the composition → Seven Little Movements for violin, cello and piano is the model for a project called “Invent Music at School“ in Dresden, created by the team of Matthias Lorenz (Violoncello) and → Johannes Korndörfer (composition).

• 2005 Jury at the awards for composition ”Dresden 2006 – Klang – Stadt – Stille” of the → elole-Klaviertrio in Dresden.

• 2008-2013 Organizer of the concert series → Bach.heute of the cellist Matthias Lorenz in Oldenburg.

• Move to Frankfurt.

• 2014-2019 Organizer of the concert series → Alte Meister of the cellist Matthias Lorenz in Oldenburg.

• From 2018 to summer 2023, author of a total of 59 concert introductions for the "Freunde und Förderer of the Hessisches Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester".


Awards


• 1991 composition award of the Kulturkreises der Deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI and the Gesellschaft für Neue Musik for the piece → Am On The Verge, Concentric - music for percussion, string quintet and orchestra (1990).

• 1993 Kunstpreis of the City of Cloppenburg for the composition → In the Great Between, Overnight - music in ten variations for mixed chorus, percussion, violin, cello, and piano (1993).

• 1994 yearlong scholarship from the state of Niedersachsen.

• 1995 scholarship from the Foreign Ministry.

• 1996 scholarship from Darmstadt.

• 2000 Audience Prize at the Niedersächsische Festival for free theatre in Göttingen, for the play → Tearing of the Shadow (incidental music for the staging by the → Theaters Wrede).

• 2002 Award of the Niedersächsische Lottostiftung for free theatre for the play → Little Men (incidental music for the staging by the Theaters Wrede).

• 2015 Award of the international Competition Composer's Voice, New York, for the piece → „When One Evening ...“ - music for tenor saxophone, string quartet and piano.
